Wild

I opted to listen to this audio book on my way home from California via plane (almost 8 hours air time). I know it seems like some voyeuristic tendency that I listen to my erotica on public transit but this was an attempt to quell any notions of motion sickness out of my system with arousal. Unfortunately my plan didn’t work and I was very woozy after my many transfers, but Wild was good company nonetheless. I had gotten this audio book late last year after noticing its popularity and decided that I could count it in my 52 if I listened to it again. I didn’t know then that it was so erotic as I believe it was categorized as a paranormal thriller and possibly a romance so when the sex scenes came up in vivid detail while I was working, well, it was a (pleasant) surprise. This is a book that can easily entertain a second listen or more and is in its own unique genre. I don’t really read/listen to erotica but Wild had a lot of plot and character details that gave it a full volume. Personally, it’s the perfect guilty pleasure read, though I don’t hold it in low regard- in fact quite the opposite. This just isn’t the type of book I usually read, but I am glad I picked it up.

Here’s the premise-

Selene Rhodes has spent most of her life in painful isolation in attempts to keep a secret forever hidden. The secret being that she can shapeshift into whatever animal she chooses, but more regretfully, once a month during the full moon she shifts beyond her control into a wolf-like monster void of any human conscience. When she wakes from such a night to find a young woman, Eve Thomas, in danger beneath a strange masked man in the park she rushes to save her via wolf form. The connection between them is beyond explanation as they grow closer. Selene struggles to balance her secret within a new relationship as Eve struggles to identify her attacker/serial killer. Eventually everything comes to a head and both Eve and Selene have to face their conflicts.

The connection between Eve and Selene is, well, it’s oozing with sexual density. There’s something wildly appealing in reading two people in longing finally finding each other. The relationship progressed very quickly- they fell in love after a few weeks. I couldn’t really complain here because my fiancé and I acted the same (I believe I used the L word within the first ten days of us dating- hold back your U-Haul jokes, we’re about to celebrate our 5 year anniversary) and that’s without a paranormal connection. The sex was also described in tantalizing detail, so if you’re looking for something to incite a frisky night- look no further. There is more to this story than the erotic notions though- a compelling plot including catching a killer and braving the task of revealing your true self in the name of love is included; it is all very compelling. I enjoyed this story the first time, the second time, and will probably enjoy it on the third run through.
