In honor of Valentine’s Day I thought I’d review something erotic to help get us all in the mood. I found The Sex Therapist Next Door when I checked out which books made the LesbianReview’s hall of fame, and everyone loved this one. I was familiar with Meghan O’Brien from her hit, Wild (review to come) and thought I’d give this a go. I’m glad I did! O’Brien writes the hottest sex scenes (I’ll elaborate on this later).
Be honest, am I a bad person for listening to over two hours of this on a train with an unsuspecting older woman sitting right next to me? I feel like if I was a man, listening to porn on the train would be enough to invoke public outrage, while I suspect a young lady would be in the clear? I conclude that this is because a hard-on is more threatening. Or maybe anyone who listens to porn on a full train is a social deviant, but cut me some slack- I was coming home after a stressful week and no one (especially the old lady next to me) knew my secret; it might as well have not happened.
Okay, here’s the premise-
Diana Kelley is a sex therapist who holds special sessions for her clients which involve her demonstrating different sexual, uh, verbs with an assistant. Unfortunately, Diana’s assistant, and long-time best friend, suffers an injury the night of their first session and Diana is desperate. Desperate enough to ask her next door neighbor, Jude Monaco, to fill her fallen friend’s place. Jude is a 26-year old writer who had been fantasizing about Diana for some time. Needless to say she eagerly agrees and the two woman embark on a very sexual adventure. I’m talking anal, role playing, vagina massages, and that’s not even getting into all the loving dirty talk (which is the best kind of oxymoron). Although Jude is open in regards to her feelings towards Diana, Diana puts a hard stop to any actions which aren’t related to their professional arrangement. She’s got baggage, but sex is often a catalyst to love and that just complicates everything.
Personally, I thought this was ideal erotica. It was jam packed with sex and had just enough story line to make me feel connected to the characters. I found it ironic that Diana teaches intimacy, yet won’t allow anyone to be intimate with her beyond a sexual level (though the desire for more practically drips off her). In terms of substance, not too much time is given to anything on a deeper lever. The two main characters have some back story, but it’s mostly sex, and conflict, and then more sex. During some of the conflict, specifically the fight in the car, I thought Diana acted a little too immature. I’m not sure if a statement was trying to be made because of the age difference between the two, but it just felt a little too unrealistic to me. Obviously, I’m willing to suspend my suspicion of disbelief as this story is normalizing a therapeutic sex workshop that occurs in a group setting exclusively with lesbians. Where can I find this?
I imagine this book, in audio or print, would be a good resource to heat things up with a partner.
If you prefer your erotica to have a variety of different sex scenes all scoring high in terms of creativity, and you aren’t easily offended by role playing that includes some crass language, then you might enjoy The Sex Therapist Next Door.

I loved this book and will definitely read it again! And maybe not just the sex parts!
I don’t have an answer to your question about yourself (although I would tend to agree with your conclusion). I sometimes ask myself if it’s appropriate for me to read books that have an erotic nature (or are fully erotic in nature) when I’m at lunch at work. OT1H, I am on my own time, and I’m not using work resources (reading on my Kindle, not my employer’s computer). OTOH – well, I will leave that part alone. 🙂
I am enjoying your reviews – thank you!
Eh no harm, no foul is my rule of thumb. Plus, that lunch break rush probably increases your work productivity for the rest of the day 😉
I’m glad you’re enjoying the reviews!
